Design trends architecture & interior 2021

Published on 18 December 2020

Our world is in full motion. Especially 2020 was a year of big changes and uncertainty. The corona pandemic currently is an all-determining factor, but also other developments in society and the uprising of a new generation influence how we look at the world and ourselves. What is the influence of all these factors on the built environment and our interiors? And how will we see this in amongst other things the use of colour and materials? An overview of some upcoming design trends in the field of architecture and interior for 2021.

Clean air

After the corona pandemic clean air and the air quality will become more important in the fight against harmful viruses. That's why in the architecture and interior more and more is being looked at technologies to provide clean air inside. In the field of design this is realised in the use of innovative materials with a low environmental impact and surfaces ease to clean. In the field of floors this means an increasing demand for hygienic floor solutions. Regarding colour we see specific applications inspired by nature. This translates to a colour image of soft pastel shades combined with neutral and earthly tones. Think about blue as symbol for pure water and clean air and green linking to nature landscapes. In the field of architecture we will see materials creating an image of purity. Think about shining polished steel or transparent materials like glass, executed indifferent structures referring to clean water and clean air. A good example is the new Depot of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

GENERATIon Z

Generation Z will have a big impact on our future world. This group has a youthful mind, is open-minded, developed, responsible, caring and social. Possessions are not important to them and they like to share with each other. This generation likes little personal luxuries like fresh biological products and artisanal unique products with a story. Preferably with a local origin. In the field of design you see this in playful shapes, the use of experimental materials and vivid colours like yellow, lilac, powder pink and bright red resembling energy.

NOSTALGIa

The post corona period creates a longing to the past. We find nostalgia in eclectic architecture and decorative interiors. In the architecture you see old details and shapes being honoured. Architecture becomes an interesting mix of vintage elements and tights lines. In the use of colour you see different tones of broken white, combined with moss green and black as details. Under influence of the staying at home trend you see cosy interiors appearing in the field of design. Old and new are connected to each other. In the use of colour you see this in earthly tones like terra, sand yellow and nude pink combined with soft, cuddly materials.

Flowing and ORGANIc

Natural organic shapes speak their own aesthetic language in soft and pure colours. In the architecture you can often find these flowing shapes in facades and facade covering. Windows and doors flow together with this trend. In the use of colour this is shown in brown and copper-like tones. In the design you find metal furniture with a natural mat finishing and flowing body-like shapes strengthening the natural aspect. Regarding use of colour, we find a lot of terracotta shades and clay colours.

Communal and sustainable

The link between older and younger generations shines through in the architecture and the interior design through the concept of sharing. The architecture focusses on common residential buildings with a roof garden, shared (office) spaces and green roofs. Sustainability is central with this trend, using dark green and grey-white as main colours. In the field of design you find furniture to be designed more sustainable to last for several generations. They have playful shapes but are also functional. The use of colour is sober with greyish greens and orange and cobalt blue details.

Dark and salvaged

Our world currently enormously changing due to the corona pandemic instils fear. We look to the future with a down feeling and this is shown in a dark colour palette. Cocooning is hot; we retreat in our own safe bubble and shut off from the uncertain outside world. In the architecture we see this in the tend towards cosy, salvaged spaces, looking somewhat like a cave. Walls and facades are inspired on rocks and caves, in balance with cool and straight lines and the use of natural materials like chalk stone combined with tight materials like aluminium. The use of colour is mainly ash grey and black. In the field of design you find separate spaces, dark yet cosy and slightly gothic. Modern is combined with old, like metal with nature stone. Furniture is executed minimalistic with rich materials like marble. Regarding colours we see details of sand yellow combined with metallic effects and kaki.
