Do’s and don’ts of an eclectic interior

Published on 21 April 2021

An eclectic interior is about a mix of different styles. Eclectic literally means ‘picking the best’. Thus, with an eclectic style it’s about putting together the best stylistic elements from various styles. The nice thing about an eclectic style is that nothing is a must and everything is allowed. But does this mean you can just ‘throw’ some random things together? Most certainly not! In an eclectic interior it’s about the art of combining. Below you’ll find some do’s and don’ts for creating an eclectic interior.

DO’S

  • Dare and show guts! Don’t be afraid to combine completely different items from different styles with each other. Try multiple combinations, it often is surprising how from a mix of different style a unity can emerge.
  • Make use of contrasts. Tight, smooth surfaces with soft and warm materials, straight lines with round shapes, old with new, classic furniture with modern eye catchers or neutral tones with a number of outspoken colors.
  • Make it personal. The power of an eclectic style is personality. Pieces of furniture or accessories with a personal story are a good fit. Think of an old family piece, hand-made souvenirs from a far trip or an outstanding item from the history of your company.
  • Use art. Art goes well together with an eclectic interior. Due to the distinctive and personal nature of art you easily create unique eye catchers giving the interior a completely own appearance.

DON’TS

  • Don’t just put some things together. Eclectic does not mean chaotic. To create a kind of unity and coherence, you can opt for a resemblance in color, shape, material or design. Use for example a fixed color scheme or an accent color you have come back everywhere. Or choose a certain design you repeat in multiple interior items.
  • Don’t lose yourself in all kinds of tinsels. It’s better to have a number of outstanding eye catchers and distinctive stylistic elements than all kinds of odds and ends causing things to look disorganized and messy. If you have a number of small items in a similar style or with the same topic, group them in a small collection and illuminate them in a beautiful show-off space.
  • Don’t overdo things. Keep a calm base with a carefully assembled color palette and consequently implement this everywhere. A lot of different (dominant) colors together quickly are too much. From this calm base you now can go wild with various materials, shapes and prints.

PRINTS IN an ECLECTIC INTERIoR

Prints are well suitable to use in an eclectic interior. You can combine them as you wish and with them you easily create distinctive eye catchers. And even better: you can carry them out in your personal style, colors, shapes and sizes! Bo doing so you give them that unique personal touch and you attune them perfectly to your own eclectic style.
