Effective zoning with the help of flooring

Published on 29 October 2023

A clear layout and routing in building puts users at ease and contributes to a positive experience. An effective way to quickly identify different function areas and simply find your way, is the application of zoning. Floors excellently lend themselves for this purpose. A thought-out floor design guides users in a natural way through the building and brings them as if it were automatically to the place they need to be.

THE power of ZONING

Many companies and organizations divide their spaces into zones, where each zone is dedicated to a certain activity or department. Since the rise of big open spaces, we see zoning being used more and more. It helps with the creation of an automatic flow, provides an overview, and contributes to the accentuation of certain fields of attention. With it you can stimulate certain behavior in an area and manage in a way that feels natural and intuitive. It’s an effective method for example to emphasize walking path and indicate specific spaces without using written signage. A well-designed zoning concept provides a seamless transition between zones and at the same time keeps a strong cohesion and visual identity. Zones can for example have the same overall scheme, but still differ from each other with the use of different color accents.

floors and ZONING

Floors are an ideal tool to apply zoning. By defining different floor surfaces in a space, geared to various function areas, you can distinguish the different zones from each other. In the flooring design you can afterwards vary in color, design, pattern, laying direction or a combination of them to indicate the transition from one zone to the other. Most obvious is the use of one and the same design in different colors, but what about one design in different laying patterns. For example, walking paths posed as planks and in the adjacent areas in a herringbone pattern. Another possibility is the use of contrasting planks and tiles, for example a combination of wood and stone patterns in different colors. If you want to take it a step further, you can make use of special laying patterns and floor designs. Perfect to define zones in a stylish way and highlight certain areas in a visually appealing way.

LVT flooring for EFFECTIVE ZONING

LVT (or PVC) flooring is ideal for the application of effective zoning and routing. By using the vast choice of colors, patterns, and distinctive laying patterns, with LVT you can create a tight and visually interesting, zoned environment. LVT can also be used in combination with contrasting materials. You can combine it for example with carpet or a different type of flooring like woven vinyl. Here, it’s important to align the combination of materials well to the functionality of the space.

The LVT flooring of the British Amtico offers designers numerous possibilities to create zoning. These PVC floors are available in a wide range of colors and textures in different sizes and are easy to cut into a unique flooring design. A practical ‘tool’ for the composition of a distinctive flooring design is Designers’ Choice: a selection of around twenty laying patterns assembled from the Amtico Signature collection. They vary from herringbone, Hungarian point, and Versailles parquet to more fluid patterns with organic lines and shapes like the stylish Arc or Lune.
