How sustainable are we actually?

What does sustainability mean? A question I often ask myself and our wide clientele, from installers and construction managers to architects and top business people. Conclusion? As I expected: sustainable has become a container concept. People and organisations, sometimes with intend, use it in their own way. Furthermore, certifications are truly earned and won, but also bought by manufacturers and suppioer, making clarity for clients sometimes pretence.

Meaning of sustainability

Everyone wants to be distinctive, but what does sustainability truly mean?

 The Dutch dictionary 'Dikke van Dale' gives the following definitions:

1. lasting for a long time
2. little susceptible to wear or deterioration
3. little impact on the environment

The United Nations puts it this way:

"Sustainable development is the development resembling the needs of the present without endangering the capability of future generations to provide their own needs."

The explanation of 'sustainability' is wide and involves about what is processed in a product, but also on how long you can use it and the environmental impact of this use. The balance between them also stays an interpretation. How sustainable is an environmental friendly floor after all if it doesn't last long?
