Pantone color of the year 2023: welcome to the magentaverse

Pantone has announced the new color for the year 2023: Viva Magenta (18-1750). The color institute designates the color as an unconventional tone for an unconventional time. Viva Magenta represents resilience, the optimism and the creativity many of us hope to feel when we enter the new year. The color explores the interplay between the real world and the virtual world, which is becoming more and more relevant as the meta verse looms up bigger. Viva Magenta writes a new story, worked out by Pantone in a whirling ‘Magentaverse’ experience.

VIBRANT AND EXUBERANT

Viva Magenta is a vibrant color bursting of energy and strength which encourages experimenting and self-expression. With its exuberance it promotes fun and optimism. It is a color that is bold, full of humor and inclusive to everyone. The nuanced crimson red tone offers balance between warm and cold. A hybrid color which effortlessly represents both the physical and the virtual of our multidimensional world. Assertive, but not aggressive. It is a crimson red that does not dominate, but instead has a “fist in a velvet glove” approach. A transforming red tone that can guide design to create a more positive future, according to Pantone.

ORIGIN OF VIVA MAGENTA

Viva Magenta is a tone rooted in nature, deriving from the red color family that gives expression to a new signal of strength. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at Pantone: “In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

RED, PINK OR PURPLE?

But what kind of color is Viva Magenta exactly? Red (to which Pantone itself refers) of pink? Or maybe even purple? Opinions are divided on this. In the color circle magenta can be found between red and blue, going from fuchsia (with more red light) through pink to purple (with more blue light). In that sense the color can be considered as a compromise between red and blue, capable of connecting and uniting. However you look at it, Viva Magenta is a versatile color with which you can go in multiple directions. An interesting tone to experiment and vary with in the interior.
