Pantone color of the year 2025: Mocha Mousse

Published on 28 January 2025

You have probably seen it already, the new color of the year 2025 recently launched by color institute Pantone. A warm, rich earthy tone named PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse. The soft brown color comes with a feeling of comfort, harmony and a touch of elegance. But why this color? What does Mocha Mousse mean and how to apply this color in the interior?

MOCHA MOUSSE: warm and tasteful

Mocha Mousse is a warm, earthy color resembling of the rich shades of coffee and cacao with a hint of caramel. The name evokes images of luxury, comfort and indulgence. Think of a creamy coffee mousse, the rich flavors of chocolate or a lovely warm cup of coffee. A tasteful color which invites you to relax and feel at home. Mocha Mousse surrounds us with a feeling of warmth. It radiates safety and security, without being heavy or overwhelming. Depending on how you combine it, the color appears on the one hand accessible and trusted and the other hand ambitious and luxurious.

why MOCHA MOUSSE?

Pantone doesn’t just simply choose the color of the year. A meticulous selection process is being followed, based on trends in fashion, art, technology and social and cultural movements. Mocha Mousse is a color that symbolizes connection and balance. In a world that is turning ever faster, there is a growing need for rest and comfort. We desire the creation of small moments of joy, not just for ourselves, but also to share with others. This color reflects a desire for stability and warmth, while it also leaves space for personal interpretation.

the rise of brown shades

Psychologically speaking, the color brown, where Mocha Mousse is part of, has a calming effect. It is being associated with reliability, stability and nature. This makes the color a perfect fit with the current design trends in which natural materials and organic shapes are at the center. The new color, therefore, doesn’t come as a big surprise. Last year we already saw the rise of brown shades. Not just in the interior, amongst others in furniture and color palettes of well-known paint brands. Brown has also been seen frequently already on the catwalk in collections of big fashion houses. Furthermore, Mocha Mousse also fits well as an extension of the popularity of earthy and terracotta tones, a color trend that has been going on for a while.

MOCHA MOUSSE IN the INTERIoR

Mocha Mousse evokes a feeling of warmth and reliability. It is color that feels both domestic and refined. In the interior, it created and inviting atmosphere, perfect for spaces where comfort, a welcoming feeling and a hint of luxury are at the core. The color is ideal to use as a neutral foundation for big surfaces like walls and floors, but the other way around also for (small) chic accents in the shape of a rug, furniture piece or accessories.

combining MOCHA MOUSSE

Mocha Mousse is a surprisingly versatile color. It sometimes contains subtle undertones of red or purple and can be combined in different ways. With light, neutrals shades like beige, taupe, ivory and nudes you create a soft, serene look. In combination with rich colors like dark green, ocher yellow or deep blue, a luxurious, more classical atmosphere is created. Turquoise, various shades of purple and pink and energetic shades of green also fit surprisingly well with Mocha Mousse, for a more playful effect. Finally, shining metallics in for example copper or gold can create a luxurious touch.
