The ideal workplace for Gen Z

Published on 02 February 2024

As relatively new generation on the labor market, many employers find it difficult to understand Generation Z and to bind them. Who exactly is Generation Z? What drives them and what do they consider to be important? And how do I get and keep them aboard? In this article we zoom in onto the needs of these digital natives and how to translate their wishes to a Gen Z-proof workplace.

WHAT CHARACTERIZES GENERATION Z?

Generation Z (in short Gen Z) is born between 1997 and 2012. Sometimes these dates are widened a bit to the period between 1995 and 2015. It’s the first generation completely raised in a digital world, for this reason they are also being called digital natives. They cannot imagine a time without internet, technology, apps, social media, and particularly their smartphone. Place and time hardly play a part for Gen Z. Due to social media they are connected to everyone everywhere in the world, no matter what time it is. Gen Z is used to live in a world on demand, where they have access to the needed information and services with one push of the button. Autonomy, flexibility, self-reliance, and transparency are important values in their lives. When it comes to work, they seek fulfillment in a job that contributes to the world, personal growth, and financial security.

AUTONOMY AND FLEXIBILITY

Freedom of choice comes first for Gen Z. They want to have control of their own (work) life and clearly decide for themselves what fits them where and when. Flexibility is an essential part of their work ethic. The possibility to adapt the working hours and place of work to their personal needs, is being valued highly. This comes from their desire to a balanced life where work and spare time are complementing instead of conflicting each other. The access to a hybrid workplace therefore is very important. But also, with the choice from different kinds of workplaces, geared to personal preferences and the type of work, you’ll make Gen-Z employees happy. A one size fits all office is a no-go for them and is not an option anymore.

MEANING AND AUTHENTICITY

Gen Z is searching for meaning in their work: they want to have an impact and contribute to a better world. This is fed by them being raised in world full of social unrest and crises. Think for example of the economic crisis, climate change, housing crisis, covid pandemic and terrorism. Therefore, as a company, make clear what you stand for and what your social goals are. Authenticity is important here; Gen Z spots empty words and promises from a mile away. Translate this into a working environment that conveys the core values and identity of your organization in a visible and tangible way.

CONNECTION AND WORKING TOGETHER

Gen Z is a social and inquisitive generation and likes to come to the office. Mind you, they like to decide when and at what time themselves. They have a great need for contact with co-workers to exchange knowledge, brainstorm and learn from each other, Work is not a boring list of tasks to check step by step, but it revolves around having fun, meaningfulness and working together. The office for them is most of all a place of meeting and connection. They like informal contact and are averse to hierarchy. Also good to know: Gen Z is quickly bored and distracted. They need sufficient stimuli and challenges to stay alert. Employers can respond to this with a unique office environment with a lot of variety and experience. For example, offices inspired by a hospitality concept work well in that respect.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Gen Z attached great importance to well-being and a healthy lifestyle. Especially mental health has their attention. The digital era and social media create a continuous flow of stimuli. With it comes a lot of stress and unrest. Therefore, they feel attracted to an employer that values a good work-life balance and offers space for moments of relaxation. For example, a good lunch, a workplace with lots of green, a healthy indoor climate, relaxation spaces and opportunities for exercise appeal to Gen Z.

ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY

Gen Z is raised with smartphones, social media, and constantly evolving technology. A well-working digital infrastructure is a must for them and goes without saying. Slow Wi-Fi, a faltering network and outdated systems are out of the question. Gen Z wants to work in a smart environment in which they can always and effortlessly access their data, documents, apps, and systems. An office that’s not only modern, but also is provided with the latest tools and software is being viewed as a sign of commitment to constant innovation. This support them not just in their work, but also amplifies the feeling of connectedness to the organization.
