The role of color in education

Published on 27 January 2022

Color influences our emotions, our well-being and behavior and consequently is determinative for how we feel. The right use of colors has a positive effect on our focus and promotes performances. An interesting point in the design of educational spaces. What is exactly the role different colors play in this regard and how can you apply them to create an optimal educational environment? And which other aspects do you need to take into account with the use of color in education?

COLOR PREFERENCE

Multiple studies show the effect color has on our memory and the storage of information. Research has indicated that the learning performances of young children between the age of 6 and 11 can be improved by 55-78% when they work in a space with their favorite colors. What those colors are exactly can be different for each child, but the preference of color look to be bound to age. This can roughly be divided into the following categories:

  • Young children have a strong preference for vivid, powerful colors. Think of the primary colors red, yellow and blue, but also the secondary colors green, orange and purple. Softer color nuances like pastel tones and naturals are less in demand at a young age.
  • Towards secondary school age, the personal development and shaping of the own identity starts playing a role with the preference for color. Color choices become more individual, making the color spectrum to apply broader.
  • Older scholars and adults more often have a preference for a calmer color image and harmonious colors (or color combinations). Personal color preferences are factor here as well of course. We all know that one colorful colleague or for those who like it the crazier the better.

Function of the space

The function of the space play a determining role at the color choice. You can image for spaces where focus and concentration are central factors to call for completely different colors than spaces directed to interaction and communication. To know which colors work best for what type of space, it’s important to know what the influence of the different colors is on our mood and behavior.

Red accelerates respiration, blood pressure and heart rate. It increases alertness and works activating. Ideal for spaces where action or physical movement takes place, like a gymnasium. An excess of red distracts and creates unease, so this color is less suitable for spaces where concentrated work is required.

Yellow is a positive, energetic color which works motivating and stimulating. It stimulates the brain and cognitive abilities and is therefore also known as the color of intelligence. Ideal for an educational environment, especially in space where is being creatively discussed and brainstormed. Be aware of an overload though, too much yellow is fatiguing to the eyes and works overstimulating.

Orange is an active and enthusiastic color which stimulates communication. It’s a true energizer and radiates playfulness and fun. Perfect for playrooms and places encourage social contact.

Green is the color close to nature and is the most pleasant to the eyes. Green works calming, relaxing and stress reducing. Because it both soothes as refreshes, green creates balance and harmony. A color for each space, but especially ideal for relaxation spaces, the faculty lounge o places where can be work in complete peace.

Blue is soothing, brings calm and creates a sense of safety. In comparison to red it reduces the heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. Blue has a positive effect on the concentration and therefore is amongst other applications perfect for focus areas and exam rooms.

Pink staat voor zachtheid, zorgzaamheid en medeleven. Het stimuleert verbinding en begrip. Roze tinten doen het daarom goed in ruimtes die sociale interactie en samenwerking stimuleren.

Purple is the color of luxury, creativity and imaginative power. This color comes through well in spaces where creative subjects are being taught like fine arts, drama and dance.

interesting puzzle

With the application of color there are many more aspects to take into account. Think about natural light, color saturation or light reflection values of for example floors, walls and other surfaces. But also for example the interior concept and the identity of the educational institution play a role. Exactly the combination of all factors make the choice for the right colors and color combinations an interesting puzzle. At LEOXX we know like no one else what floors and custom interior materials can do in this regard. That’s why we like to think along with you in finding the right pieces of the puzzle and creating an optimal educational environment and experience.
