The uprising of eccentric hotel interiors

Published on 07 January 2019

Nowadays we see more and more eccentric hotel interiors. In the interior design striking colors, different materials and designs and a dynamic lighting design are being used. How come we don’t see these eccentric interiors being used in other application, like office buildings or houses, but increasingly in hotels?

the 'ALICE IN WONDERLAND-EFFECT'

To be able to respond to this, you have to put yourself in the shoes of the users of a certain space. You have to understand them and know what experience they expect when entering a space. You’re probably thinking; ‘Isn’t that the base for a good interior design in every industry or application?’

You are right. However, if you compare hotel design with the design of houses and office buildings, you do notice differences in the desired experience for the same users. Some call this the ’Alice in Wonderland-effect’.

The desire to escape the daily reality for a while is getting bigger and bigger. An environment that strongly differs from the interior at home or at the office and takes you to a different world, contributes strongly in this regard. A world where an oasis of color, big scale pattern and playful light tickle all your senses and amaze. Eccentric hotel interiors offer the perfect starting point.

Eccentric HOTEL INTERIoRS IN the netherlands

The ‘Alice in Wonderland-effect’ being created with eccentric hotel interiors by now has emerged largely in the Netherlands. To give you an idea of the possibilities, we have listed 5 Dutch hotels for you well known for their eccentric hotel interior.

1. Hotel Room Mate Bruno – Rotterdam

For Hotel Room Mate Bruno, the monumental Pakhuismeesteren at the Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam transformed into a striking hotspot with an extravagant nature. The spectacular interior is full of subtle reference to the nautical theme. In the hotel rooms astronomical elements of navigation are found and in the restaurant spices are a fitting decoration. On the ceiling in the hallway we find the most spectacular detail: hundreds of meters of wallcovering, printed with ancient Dutch sea charts.

2. Niu Dairy Hotel – Haarlem

The entire interior in the Niu Dairy Hotel in Haarlem refers to dairy and music. Not an everyday combination, but a special one. How this remarkable choice for dairy and music came to be? On the location of the hotel there used to be dairy factory ‘De Sierkan’ and next to the hotel there is pop venue the ‘Petronaat’. Vandevloeren approached our custom printing label Prints van Oranje for a unique printing carpet inspired by cow (marks).

3. Kaboom Hotel – Maastricht

Five stately, historical buildings combined into one fresh budget hotel. Yes, that clashes: Kaboom. Due to the mix of a classic flower wallcovering inspired by printing wallcovering, fresh white and functional furniture and all kinds of details a classic interior has been developed with an eccentric twist.

4. The College Hotel – Amsterdam

In the interior design of The College Hotel in Amsterdam the limits of combining materials, colors and patterns were explored. With the transformation of the monumental building as much as possible historical aspects are returned to their original state. The result is a boudoir setting with an exciting and harmonious unity.

5. Nhow Amsterdam RAI – Amsterdam

Lastly, an eccentric hotel interior scheduled to open its doors in 2020, but which can definitely not be kept from our list: The Nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel. This hotel might be the definition of ‘eccentric’. Themes from the Golden Age, with Amsterdam as the commercial center of Europe are clearly visible in the rooms. This theme is combined with the well-known international symbols like mandalas from India, Mexican ‘Día de los Muertos’ skulls or cherry blossoms from Japan: all symbols are placed in a modern, international setting.
