Featured design trend: gradients

Published on 27 October 2023

One of the design trends on the rise the last couple of years is the use of gradients. Originally gradients were mostly seen in the digital world and graphic design, but now they have found their way to fashion, beauty, and the interior. Whether you use them in a bold and vivid way or as a soft and subtle background, gradients are a unique way to add movement, depth, and dynamics to the interior design.

WHAT IS A GRADIENT?

A gradient is a gradual transition between two or multiple colors. For example, from pink to blue, green to orange or from purple to pink to orange. It is often used to create a sense of movement or transition, or to make a design visually more appealing. Gradients are often used in web design and graphic design. Think of backgrounds for webpages, logos, commercials, packages, and printing material. One of the most famous examples of this is the Instagram logo. A gradient should not be confused with an ombre by the way. Here the color transition is limited to just one color gradually shifting from light to dark (or the other way around).

GRADIENTS IN THE INTERIOR

Gradients are a dynamic and visually interesting way to shape spaces and play with color. The fluent transition from one color to another creates a sense of harmony and unity, making a space possibly feel more coherent. By choosing colors evoking specific moods and emotions, designers can use gradients to transmit these feelings. A gradual transition from blue to green for example can give a natural, calmer ambiance, while a gradient with pink, red and orange tones evokes a more energetic vibe. Gradients can be integrated into different elements of the interior. Use them as eyecatcher on the walls, color accents on your furniture and accessories or as mood maker for your curtains. Or what about the flooring? Especially carpet or a rug form an ideal canvas for gradients. Due to the soft texture, the gradual transition of the colors comes into its own beautifully. Also in lighting nowadays we see the gradient trend being reflected frequently.

The Versatility of GRADients

Gradients are extremely versatile and offer numerous possibilities for customization. You can adapt them exactly to the color scheme of your interior design or corporate identity. Furthermore, you can play with the number of colors and the way in which the colors flow into each other. Do you go for a clear and tighter transition between the different colors for example or does a softer transition in which it’s as if all colors blend together suits better?
