Hotels and floor heating: possible with more and more floors

Published on 17 May 2018

In the hospitality industry, sustainability is a hot topic. That's why hotel owners prefer to choose for floor heating. To the modern interior architect the job to find a matching floor. The opportunities are fortunately increasing vastly. Many floors suitable for hotels are thermal transmittand and therefore can be used with floor heating. This way you create a comfortable place from every hotel room.

Increase use of floor heating in hotels

Hotels invest in floor heating for several reasons:

  • Less dry air and therefore a better inner climate for both guests and employees;
  • Better spread and release of warmth by conductive working floor;
  • Much more sustainable to use compared to gas-heated heating systems.

A win-win situation: 1. satisfied guests and 2. more efficient business operations. The costs during the life cycle eventually are lower. So the initial investment is being earned back.

Technical aspects

To judge whether a floor is suitable for floor heating, you need to take the following technical aspects into account:

  • RC-value. Also known as transmittance or heat conductivity coefficient. The higher this value, the less thermal transmittand a floor is. An as low as possible value is beneficial for floor heating. Casted floors (0,02 m2 K/W) have a lower RC-value compared to PVC- (0,03 - 0,05 m2) or carpet floors (0,06-0,30 m2 K/W).
  • Condensation. With textile floors usually less condensation occurs compared to hard floors. Pay attention to whether the floor heating system catches this sufficiently.

Many hotel floors suitable for floor heating

It's important to know which floor types are most efficient when using floor heating. The following hard and soft floor types are excellent to use for floor heating in the hospitality industry:

Hard floors: PVC-floors

Vinyl floors have a vivid and nature-like look. This makes them a wanted choice for hotels. The PVC-planks with wooden optics are indistinguishable from real. These floors are practical since they:

  • are less maintenance sensitive, easy to clean;
  • keep their rough nature in both dry and humid circumstances and therefore are bathroom-proof.
  • have many available designs and motifs, like for example wood, concrete and stone.

Soft floors: carpet as floor covering

Project carpet is also popular in the hospitality industry, especially in hotels. The RC-values do differ strongly for each type of carpet though. In general a maximum RC-value of 0,10 m2 K/W is advised when choosing a carpet in combination with floor heating. Much thinner carpet types meet this criterion. What makes carpet special:

  • Designs and motifs available in practically every thinkable colour;
  • More comfort: not just warm, but also soft.

Every hotel room its own floor

LEOXX’ floor solutions can be applied in different rooms of the hotel, like hotel rooms, hallways, lobbies, conference halls, the restaurant area and recreational rooms. Every floor gives its own twist to the interior concept. LEOXX has realised several inspiring projects with floors in hotels, like:

Kaboom Hotel

Kaboom Hotel in Maastricht chose Expona Domestic, completely matching the spirit of this historical location. Classical with a quirky twist, just like the rest of the interior.

  • Hotel room: neutral PVC-floor with wooden optics.

Worldhotel Wings

Worldhotel Wings in Rotterdam noticed how printing carpet added to an authentic, comfortable ambiance and pleasant acoustics, where international business people feel at home straight away.

  • Hallways and conference rooms: carpets with spicy red design;
  • Restaurant: same design carpet, but in the colour blue.

Kapellerput Conferentiehotel

Kapellerput Conferentiehotel in Heeze got inspired by nature for the design of this custom-made printing carpet. The carpet symbolises a cross section of a trunk, with corresponding annual rings.

  • Foyer: clustering of cross sections trunk;
  • Conference halls: subtle processing annual rings.

All hard and soft floors from LEOXX meet the RC-value of 0,10 m2 K/W. So don't limit yourself in the choice of product with floor heating or cooling.
