Past the herringbone floor: distinctive laying patterns for commercial areas

Published on 28 January 2025

The herringbone floor has become so established, it cannot be called a trend anymore. The popular laying pattern is a true keeper and an indispensable part of the interior. Without selling short herringbone – it remains a versatile and stylish flooring pattern – we lately see a shift to special, more distinctive laying patterns. Especially in commercial areas, where companies want to welcome their guests and visitors and surprise them with a special experience. Time to take a closer look at this trend!

The POWER OF SPECIAL laying patterns

A floor is more than a practical foundation. It’s an essential part of the atmosphere and appearance of a space. Special laying patterns give a room character and create a unique experience. They are perfect for the creation of an ultimate eyecatcher or stylish statement. Especially in professional projects like hotels, offices and high-end stores, where you want to leave an unforgettable impression. In addition, flooring patterns help to create dynamism, movement and overview. For instance, there are patterns that create a sense of direction and flow and patterns that provide structure and rest. You can also apply flooring patterns for the application of zoning, making it easy for visitors to distinguish different functional areas and to simply find their way.

POPULAR laying patterns

Below are some popular laying patterns being increasingly applied in professional interiors besides herringbone.

  1. Hungarian point
This pattern looks like herringbone, but is certainly different. In comparison to herringbone, at Hungarian point the planks are installed at an angle of 45 or 60 degrees. The top parts of the planks are connected to each other, creating a V-shaped point with at the center a characteristic line. This is also being referred to as the sergeant stripe. The result is a tight and luxurious appearance with a classical feeling. Perfect for high-end store concepts or fancy hospitality interiors.
  1. Versailles-pattern
The Versailles-pattern, originally designed for French palaces, consists of squares in which smaller planks are placed in complicated wickerwork. It radiates grandeur and gives spaces a royal feeling.
  1. French Weave and Basket Weave
Woven patterns like French Weave and Basket Weave are a piece of art on their own. They are inspired by the artisinal woven patterns of traditional parquet flooring. These classical flooring patterns are perfect to add style and class and work well in big spaces.
  1. Mosaic and geometrical patterns
For who truly wants to think out-of-the-box, there are mosaic patterns or geometrical designs. These patterns can vary from tight and modern to detailed and artistic. They are ideal for the creation of a striking statement in spaces like lobbies, catering establishments and showrooms.
  1. Organic pattenrs
Organic laying patterns add a completely new dimension to the interior. Where most flooring patterns are built from straight lines or geometrical shapes, organic laying patterns show flowing, natural lines and shapes. They bring a unique, almost artsy dynamic to a space. Thye provide a playful effect and correspond perfectly to the current trend of organic and round shapes in interior design.
