BACK TO THE OVERVIEW

Arcam

Arcam, the architecture center of Amsterdam, has recently opened its new, permanent exposition space. The exposition design is modular: with the same elements new installations can be built over and over again. This saves materials and waste. The result is an example of custom universal design. Also the in-between curtains, provided with a unique print inspired by bio design and realized through the custom printing label Prints van Oranje, are completely custom designed.

MODULAR EXPOSITION SPACE

The design of the new exposition space was created by architectural form Dérive, who won the open call of Arcam for the design with its concept ‘Universeel Maatwerk’ (Universal Customization). In the idea, the focus goes towards the optimalization of the accessibility of the public space around Arcam and the entrance, as well as to the connection between the upper and ground floor. For the permanent exposition, movable and height-adjustable cabinets have been designed. And also, a multi-functional wall-space-closet-furniture piece connecting the ground and first floor. The jury considers it a complete and thought-out idea, that offers many exposition possibilities and surfaces. “It’s a simple and effective design that pleases the visitors, helps the exposition designers, and leaves the building itself in its value.”

BIO DESIGN PRINT ON CURTAINS

The curtains with beautifully subtle color gradient, designed by Kukka Design, are an integral part of the scenography. Besides color, decoration, sun protection and sound insulation they create a modular and flexible interpretation of the room. In this, they draw attention to what needs to be emphasized and they guide the visitor, while forming a cohesive whole. The curtain elements have been inspired by the organic shapes and color of bio design. During the day, the tones are subtle and translucent. At night, they transform into a monochrome harmony of blue tones to create a more intimate atmosphere. The colors and patterns also refer to the water surrounding the building. Due to the in-between fabric suitable for commercial use, visitors can withdraw calmly in the space without being isolated from the rest of the exposition.
