Willem Barentsz

On board of the Willem Barentsz travelers can enjoy the unique Wadden Sea feeling on their crossing from Harlingen to Vlieland or Terschellingen and vice versa. The luxury ferry, an efficient and sustainable light weight LNG-catamaran, has an interior with facilities contributing to the island experience of guests. For the design, the guest experience and the unique environment of the Unesco World Heritage site has been taken as guideline.

A GREEN CROSSING

In 2020 shipping company Rederij Doeksen put the Willem Barentsz into service. Half a year later the ferry’s sister followed: the Willem de Vlamingh. The two ships are a first: the brand new catamarans are the first ferries in the Netherlands sailing entirely on sustainable LNG gas. In addition, worldwide they are the first ships where single fuel LNG motors drive the rudder propellers directly with fixed screws. The new LNG ferry concept, combined with heat recuperation, more efficient hull lines, a light weight construction and solar panels result in a substantial reduction of harmful emissions. Herewith it offers passengers a green crossing with an as low as possible environmental impact on the protected Wadden Sea area.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE ON BOARD

The Dutch design studio Vripack was responsible for the design of the luxury ferries. As a guiding principle for the design was taken the altered experience for both islanders as island visitors. Both a physical connection for the islanders as a feeling of freedom on the Wadden Sea – to so called Wadden Sea feeling – are implemented in the total design. Everywhere on board the passengers can enjoy the constantly changing faces and colors of the Wadden Sea. In the lounges and on the sundeck this creates a lot of space and lighting. The seating spots are also designed in a way to be able to optimally enjoy the outdoors. A flowing design language connects the interior with the exterior. This can be seen in the color palette, the organic lay-out, ergonomic flow and materials and the finishing.

MARITIME FLOOR APPLICATIONS

All recreational areas on both ships are professionally equipped with floors from the Amtico Marine collection by Prolance Marine Flooring. This collection LVT floors is specially designed for the use in navigation and has been developed and tested according to the strictest demands the sector poses. The IMO SOLAS and MED certified floors have endured the toughest tests in the field of flammability and toxic smoke development. Furthermore, they are provided with a special antimicrobial technology. In addition the floors are made of phthalate free and biological plasticizers and they carry the Indoor Air Comfort Gold- and M1-certificate. With their realistic wood and stone designs the vinyl tiles and planks are a seamless fit to the natural Wadden Sea feeling and the unique experience aboard of the Willem Barentsz.
