Book store Van der Velde

Old beams in combination with tight ceilings, old hammered moldings combined with open steel book cases, traditional terracotta tiles versus raw concrete, Frisian whites besides tight wooden blocks and classic shades alternated with timeless black, grey and white. The store of Boekhandel Van der Velde in Harlingen breathes a playful mix of old and new, in which the history of the city and the contemporary modern architecture come together. The carpet with print of traditional Harlinger earthenware tiles is designed as well according to this design principle and fits seamlessly to the rest of the interior.

OLD MEETS NEW

Boekhandel Van der Velde is located together with the Openbare Bibliotheek and the Hannemahuis in three connected premises at the Voorstraat in Harlingen. Interior design agency NOMNOM Design applied the unique mix of old and new by the use of historical materials, colors, shapes and prints, but packaged in a modern fashion and a contemporary design. For the interior design of the store the designers took their inspiration on the one hand from the rich history of the harbor city Harlinger as it can be admired in the Hannemahuis. On the other hand they aligned the design to this day and age with modern features and materials, corresponding to the modern architecture of the expansion at the back of the store and the contemporary interior design in the Black Box principle already provided for the library.

Custom carpet design

The carpet in the store is completely custom designed and printed with an image of traditional Harlinger earthenware tiles barely indistinguishable from real ones. The foundation for the carpet design is a tile tableau hanging upstairs in the Hannemahuis. By scaling and printing the image on modern materials, a special and contemporary effect emerges which at the same time is an ode to the history and the old craft.
